GHAZI SULTAN

Ghazi Hamad Sultan Bin Isa (1941-2007) was a Kuwaiti architect and urban planner who is regarded as one of the key figures in the the modernisation of the State of Kuwait. Sultan is best known for his 22 kilometre urbanisation plan of the Kuwait City shoreline, developed jointly with Sasaki while working for the Ministry of Public Works. His work is characterised by a combination of modernist and vernacular styles.

Ghazi Sultan is also remembered for his significant contributions to the Arab art movement. In 1969 he established Sultan Gallery on Fahad Al Salem Street in the Qibla district of Kuwait with his sister, Najat Sultan.

Since you ask me, I will tell you that such a leader needs only two qualities — one is "Guts", and the other is the ability to make mistakes and absorb them. It is only in taking action that he will make progress, and in taking action he will make mistakes, and will then need the guts to face all opposition to fight for the ideals that he and the University believe to be worth fighting for.

The only source for such a leader in today's world is amongst its youth, for they have not yet been pacified nor polluted by experience, and the only name I can suggest, is that of myself — for I know what I am capable of doing, and I am still young.

Yours truly,
